Božidar Božanović: Serbian General

Early Life and Education

Božidar Božanović was born in 1863 in Slavonia, then part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. He pursued a military career and graduated from the military academy in Belgrade.

Military Service

In the Serbo-Bulgarian War, Božanović distinguished himself during the siege of Vidin. During the First Balkan War, he commanded the 1st Danube Infantry Division, playing a key role in the Battle of Kumanovo.

Minister of War

Following the war, Božanović served as Minister of War in Nikola Pašić's cabinet.

World War I

With the outbreak of World War I, General Božanović commanded the Užice Army (4th Army). He led his forces to victory in the Battle of Cer, forcing the Austro-Hungarian troops to retreat. However, he was soon removed from his position and appointed head of the Pirot fortified region on the Bulgarian border.

Retirement and Legacy

On November 1, 1914, Božanović resigned from his position. He died in Belgrade in 1922, leaving behind a lasting legacy as a respected military commander who played a pivotal role in Serbia's early victories in World War I.
