Early Life and Career

Milton Avery was born in Altmar, New York. His family later moved to a small town in Connecticut. Despite his family not being wealthy, Avery started working at a local factory when he was 16 years old. In 1915, he became the sole breadwinner for his family, taking on the responsibility of supporting his loved ones. Despite his busy schedule, Avery always found time for his passion for art and even enrolled in an art school in Hartford. He would paint late at night, as he had to work during the day.

Marriage and Artistic Recognition

In 1924, Avery met his future wife, Sally Michel, who was an illustrator with a decent income. This allowed Avery to quit his job and fully dedicate himself to his artistic pursuits. In the 1920s, he practiced at the Art Students League in New York City. His unique style and approach to painting garnered attention and his works started gaining value and recognition. Avery's art was not conventional for American artists at that time; although he depicted landscapes and various mass events, his paintings always stood out with their brightness and originality. Some of his works even bordered on abstraction. The metaphors portrayed in Avery's paintings often fascinated viewers, provoking contemplation about the mysteries of existence and the meaning of life.

Collaborations and Exhibitions

In the 1930s, Avery collaborated closely with Adolph Gottlieb, and in the 1940s, he joined the New York Artist Union. In 1944, Avery had his first solo exhibition, where his well-known paintings such as "Poetry Reading," "Green Sea," and "Boathouse by the Sea" were showcased.

Legacy

Milton Avery passed away on January 3, 1965, and was buried at the Woodstock Artists Cemetery. After his death, his wife, Sally, donated his diaries to the Archives of American Art. Some of Avery's notes were published and made available online, preserving his artistic thoughts and experiences for future generations.
