Early Life and Education

Canadian violist Gordon Blackstock, born and raised in Canada, moved to Toronto in 1911. He pursued his musical education at the Canadian Academy of Music under the tutelage of Luigi von Kunits.

Early Career: The Academy Quartet

Blackstock played an active role in the Academy Quartet, led by his mentor, Luigi von Kunits. As second violinist, he performed with the ensemble from 1912 to 1914 and again from 1921 to 1924.

Hart House Quartet

After the disbandment of the Academy Quartet, Blackstock co-founded the Hart House Quartet in 1923. He remained a dedicated member until 1941, not only as a violist but also as the quartet's astute manager. Blackstock's leadership and artistry played a pivotal role in establishing the ensemble's reputation as one of Canada's finest string quartets.
