Early Life and Education
Boris Kroll was born in Russian origin and became a German-American violinist and violist. He made his debut as a violinist at the age of nine. At the age of 10, he was sent to Berlin to continue his education at the Stern Conservatory, where he studied under Alexander Fiedler, Paul Juon, and Wilhelm Klatte.
Debut and Early Career
Kroll made his debut as a violist at the age of 12, replacing a missing member of his teacher's string quartet. From 1912 onwards, he toured as a soloist and ensemble performer.
Formation of the Kroll Quartet
In 1924, Kroll founded his own string quartet, which he led until 1936. During this period, he also performed and recorded as part of a piano trio with Karol Szreter and Arnold Földesy.
Joining the Budapest Quartet
In 1936, Kroll joined the renowned Budapest Quartet. From 1937 onwards, he lived in the United States along with the other members of the quartet. Participation in the quartet became the cornerstone of Kroll's musical career.
Chamber Recordings and Legacy
Despite his focus on the Budapest Quartet, Kroll also left a significant legacy of other chamber recordings. Notably, he collaborated with pianist Artur Balsam on several projects. Kroll's exceptional musicianship and dedication to his craft left an enduring mark on the world of classical music.
