Early Life and Education
Born in New York in 1909, Katims initially pursued violin lessons at Columbia University. However, upon the wise counsel of Leon Barzin, he switched to the viola, discovering his true calling.
Chamber Music and Teaching
Katims flourished in various chamber ensembles, including a 15-year collaboration as guest violist with the celebrated Budapest String Quartet. He also dedicated himself to teaching, holding prestigious appointments at the Juilliard School and Northwestern University. Katims's pedagogical prowess extended to masterclasses in Israel and China.
The NBC Symphony Orchestra
In 1943, Katims became the principal violist of the NBC Symphony Orchestra under the legendary Arturo Toscanini. He remained a vital member until its dissolution in 1954. During this period, Katims gradually ascended to the role of Toscanini's assistant conductor.
Seattle Symphony Orchestra
Upon Toscanini's retirement, he passed his baton to Katims, who immediately assumed the leadership of the Seattle Symphony Orchestra in 1954. He remained at the helm until 1976. Katims's tenure in Seattle garnered widespread recognition. In 1963, he received the Ditson Conductor's Award for his exceptional contribution to American music. A year later, he was celebrated as Seattle Man of the Year, earning a place on the cover of the city's telephone directory.
Later Life and Legacy
Katims retired from conducting in 1976 but continued to dedicate himself to music. In 2004, he co-authored his memoirs, "The Pleasure Was Ours," with his wife.
