Biography of Marc Minkowski

Marc Minkowski is a prominent French conductor and bassoonist who is widely recognized as a leading figure in the authentic performance movement. He was born into a family of accomplished professionals, with his father, Alexandre Minkowski (1915-2004), being a professor of pediatrics and one of the founders of neonatology, and his grandfather, Eugène (Evgeny Izikovich) Minkowski, being a renowned psychiatrist and psychopathologist of Russian origin.

Early Career and Musical Focus

Marc Minkowski began his career as a bassoonist in the ensembles of René Clemencic's Clemencic Consort and Philippe Pierlot's Ricercar Consort. However, his career primarily revolves around Baroque music and opera. He initially started as a bassoonist in William Christie's Les Arts Florissants ensemble.

Operatic Successes and Major Conducting Engagements

In 1996, Minkowski made his conducting debut with Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's opera "Idomeneo" at the Opéra National de Paris and also made his Salzburg Festival debut with Mozart's "Die Entführung aus dem Serail." He has also conducted notable productions such as Mozart's "Le nozze di Figaro" at the Festival d'Aix-en-Provence and Gluck's "Mitridate, Re di Ponto" at the Salzburg Festival. Minkowski has also conducted Handel's opera "Giulio Cesare" in Amsterdam, Paris, and Zurich with Cecilia Bartoli, as well as Handel's "Il Trionfo del Tempo e del Disinganno" in Zurich. Additionally, he has conducted Donizetti's "La Favorite" in Zurich and Gluck's "Iphigénie en Tauride," among many others.

Recordings and Collaborations

In addition to his work with Les Musiciens du Louvre, Minkowski has collaborated with various other ensembles, including the Mahler Chamber Orchestra, Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, Orchestre de Paris, Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra, Mozarteum (Salzburg), and Staatskapelle (Dresden). He has recorded Jacques Offenbach's works such as "Orphée aux enfers," "La Belle Hélène," and "La Grande-Duchesse de Gérolstein." Minkowski's recordings have been released on esteemed labels such as Erato and Virgin Records (EMI).
