Milva Ekonomi: Albanian Economist and Politician

Early Life and Education

Milva Ekonomi was born in Tirana, Albania, in 1962. She graduated from the University of Agricultural Sciences of Tirana with a degree in Statistics and Economics. She later earned an MBA from the University of Tirana. Ekonomi also completed advanced training courses at the Bureau of Labor Statistics (USA), Eurostat (Luxembourg), and Istat (Italy).

Career in Statistics

From 1994 to 2005, Ekonomi served as Director of Albania's Institute of Statistics. She chaired the National Nomenclature Commission and was a two-term member of the Bureau of the European Commission/UN Conference of European Statisticians. In June 2006, she established a research center on economic and social issues in Tirana.

Work in Kosovo

In 2007 and 2008, Ekonomi worked for the European Agency for Reconstruction on a statistics project in Kosovo.

Involvement in Albanian Politics

Ekonomi began her involvement in Albanian politics as a member of the Tirana Municipal Council from 2000 to 2011. She also participated in the women's rights movement in Albania.

Ministerial Appointments

After the Socialist Party's victory in the 2013 general election, Prime Minister Edi Rama appointed Ekonomi as Deputy Minister of Health. In February 2016, she was promoted to Minister of Economy, Trade, and Energy, replacing Arben Ahmetaj.

Academic Career

Ekonomi has taught at the University of Tirana, the University of Agricultural Sciences of Tirana, and the University of Mater boni Consilli. She has authored numerous publications on statistics, economics, and gender issues in both domestic and international journals.

Personal Information

Ekonomi is married with two children. She is fluent in Albanian, English, and Italian, and has a working knowledge of French.
