Minati Mondal: The Woman with 12,000 Gallstones

A Medical Anomaly

Minati Mondal, a woman from eastern India, made medical history when a staggering 11,950 gallstones were removed from her gallbladder. Initially suffering from stomach pain and heartburn, Mondal's condition was discovered during an ultrasound examination at a hospital in Kolkata.

A Surprising Discovery

Doctors were astonished to find such an extraordinary number of stones. Dr. Mahan Lal Saha, a gastrointestinal endoscopic surgeon, had initially prepared to extract a large number but was astounded when the count surpassed 5,000.

A Laparoscopic Extraction

Saha performed a one-hour laparoscopic surgery, a minimally invasive procedure that avoids large skin incisions. Using a "keyhole" technique, he meticulously removed all 11,950 stones, ranging in size from 2 to 5 millimeters.

Medical Record-Breaking

The number of gallstones extracted from Mondal's gallbladder is believed to be a new world record. Dr. Saha plans to submit the samples to the Royal College of Pathologists in London for preservation in a medical museum.

A Previous Case

Just two months prior to Mondal's surgery, Dr. Saha had operated on a patient with 1,100 gallstones. However, he discovered that in 1983, British doctors had removed 3,110 stones from a German patient. Mondal's case now surpasses that previous record threefold.

Gallstones and Health

Gallstones are formed from cholesterol and salts in the gallbladder, a pear-shaped organ located beneath the liver. While some people can have gallstones without symptoms, others may experience pain, nausea, and a risk of life-threatening infection if the stones block the gallbladder. Gallstones can also block the flow of bile from the gallbladder and liver, leading to jaundice.

Risk Factors

Gallstone disease is a common condition, with a higher prevalence in women. Consuming a diet high in fat may increase the risk of gallstone formation, but the exact causes are still not fully understood.
