Girl Living in a Tree

Miranda Gibson, an Australian environmental activist, has taken her protest to extreme measures by living in a tree for over a year. Her unique and original protest began on December 14, 2011 when she climbed up a tall tree and built a wooden platform to make it her permanent dwelling.

Protecting the Forest

Miranda's act is an attempt to save the forest from deforestation. People go to great lengths to protect nature, from going naked to avoid wearing fur to organizing sit-ins, hunger strikes, and rallies. While these actions are necessary and respected, nature itself cannot protect against modern humans. Miranda Gibson has gone a step further than many environmental defenders, choosing an incredibly extravagant way to raise awareness about the importance of preserving forests.

A Year in the Tree

Miranda Gibson has been living exclusively on the tree for over a year. She never sets foot on the ground and relies on a rope to bring up her food while disposing of waste beneath the tree. She even has a solar panel installed on the tree to power her cooking and use her laptop. The platform where Miranda resides is located 60 meters above the ground.

Fighting for the Forest

Miranda Gibson began her fight for this particular forest after realizing that despite promises of protection, deforestation was still taking place. She considers her year in the tree to be an incredible experience. She has never descended to the ground, even celebrating her birthday alone in the tree. The challenges of being alone in the tree and dealing with falling snowflakes have not deterred Miranda from continuing her protest.

Never Giving Up

After celebrating her year in the tree, Miranda Gibson has decided to remain on the tree until the forest no longer needs protection. Unfortunately, neither Miranda nor her more traditional colleagues in the fight for nature conservation have been successful in stopping deforestation. However, Miranda firmly believes that it doesn't matter how many trees they manage to save; what matters is not sitting idly by and doing nothing.
