Early Life and Education
Born in France, this renowned engraver initially pursued painting under the tutelage of the esteemed artist Rignoux. However, it was not until later that he dedicated himself fully to the art of engraving.
Technique and Notable Works
The engraver employed various techniques, including linear engraving, mezzotint, and aquatint. Among his most significant accomplishments are the engravings of Raphael's "Madonna del pesce" and "Madonna la perla," as well as Paul Delaroche's "Death of Cardinal Mazarin" and "Cardinal Richelieu Traveling on the Rhone with de Thou and Saint-Mars." He also created masterfully etched versions of Ary Scheffer's "Myrrh-Bearing Women at the Tomb of the Lord," Winterhalter's "Dolce-farniente," "The Decameron," and "Grape Harvest," as well as Léopold Conté's "The Abduction of Rebecca" and Karl Bryullov's iconic "The Last Day of Pompeii."
