Mireya Moscoso: First Female President of Panama

Early Life and Education

Mireya Elisa Moscoso Rodríguez was born on July 1, 1946, in Panama City. Her father was a school principal. In 1963, she graduated from Catholic College with a bachelor's degree in commerce.

Political Career

Assistant to Arnulfo Arias

In 1964, Moscoso joined the electoral campaign staff of Arnulfo Arias, leader of the conservative nationalist Panameñista Party. She soon became his closest aide and they married in 1968.

Exile and Return

Moscoso participated in Arias's successful presidential campaign in October 1968. However, 10 days later, they were forced to flee to the United States after Arias was overthrown by Colonel Omar Torrijos. In 1978, Moscoso returned to Panama and managed her husband's coffee plantations.

Chairman of the Arnulfista Party

Moscoso reentered politics in 1991 when she became chairman of the Arnulfista Party.

Presidency

Historic Victory

In 1994, Moscoso ran for president but was unsuccessful. However, she made history in 1999 by becoming the first female president of Panama, winning with 44% of the votes.

Personal Life

Moscoso is divorced and has one adopted child.
