Mirta Díaz-Balart: Wife of Fidel Castro
Early Life and EducationMirta Díaz-Balart was born into a politically influential Cuban family. Her father, Rafael José Díaz-Balart, served as mayor of Banes, and her mother was América Gutiérrez. She enrolled at the University of Havana to study philosophy and literature.
Marriage to Fidel Castro
During her studies, Mirta met Fidel Castro. They married on October 11, 1948. However, Castro's political activities and exile in 1955 led to a divorce. Mirta retained custody of their son, Fidel.
Exile and Second Marriage
After a failed attempt by Castro to regain custody, Mirta married Emilio Núñez Blanco, the son of the Cuban representative to the United Nations. She and her family fled to Spain in 1959 during the Francoist dictatorship.
Personal Life
In her second marriage, Mirta had two daughters. Her nephews, Lincoln and Mario Díaz-Balart, became prominent anti-communist politicians in the United States. She passed away on July 6, 2024, at the age of 95.
