Queen Sofia of Spain, the wife of King Juan Carlos I, was born Princess Sophia of Greece and Denmark in 1938 in Athens, Greece. She belongs to one of the most distinguished families in Europe, with connections to the royal dynasties of Russia, Germany, and Great Britain.

During her childhood, Queen Sofia and her family were exiled, and she grew up in Egypt and South Africa. They returned to Greece after World War II in 1946. Queen Sofia received an excellent education, studying natural sciences, pedagogy, history, music, and archaeology.
