Political and Public Figure of Azerbaijan
Early Life and EducationMir Davud Guseynov was born in 1888, 1893, or 1894 (sources vary). He graduated from a secondary school in 1906 and enrolled in the Baku Real School. From 1913 to 1917, he attended the Moscow Commercial Institute but did not graduate.
Revolutionary Activity
In 1918, Guseynov joined the "Hummet" organization, which advocated for Azerbaijani independence. Despite having no prior sympathy for socialism, he supported the organization's efforts to overthrow the existing government.
Founding the Azerbaijan Communist Party
In 1920, Guseynov played a key role in uniting the "Hummet," "Adalat," and the Baku Committee of the Russian Communist Party (Bolsheviks) into the Azerbaijan Communist Party (Bolsheviks). He was elected to the party's Presidium and became chairman of its Central Committee.
Participation in the April Uprising
Guseynov was heavily involved in the April Uprising, which led to the establishment of Soviet rule in Azerbaijan in 1920. He served as chairman of the Central Staff of the Combat Organization of the Baku District and coordinated with the Red Army.
Government Positions
After the April Uprising, Guseynov became the People's Commissar of Finance and later served as People's Commissar for Foreign Affairs and Chairman of the Supreme Economic Council of the Azerbaijan SSR. He also represented Azerbaijan at the 14th and 16th Congresses of the Russian Communist Party (Bolsheviks and All-Union Communist Party (Bolsheviks), respectively.
Intrapart Conflict
The Azerbaijan Communist Party faced internal conflicts between Armenian and Russian communists, and between younger and older members. Guseynov was involved in this conflict, leading to his recall from Baku in 1921.
Later Career
In 1922, Guseynov became Deputy People's Commissar for Nationalities in the Russian SFSR. In 1930, he was appointed First Secretary of the Communist Party of Tajikistan. However, he was removed from this position in 1933.
Arrest and Execution
In 1937, Guseynov was arrested during the Great Purge. He was accused of being a member of a counterrevolutionary organization and sentenced to death by the Military Collegium of the Supreme Court of the USSR. He was executed on April 21, 1938.
Posthumous Rehabilitation
In 1958, Guseynov was posthumously rehabilitated. He is considered a prominent figure in the history of Azerbaijan and the Soviet Union.
Family
Guseynov was married to Tamara Khoyskaya, the daughter of Azerbaijani Democratic Republic Prime Minister Fatali Khan Khoyski. His wife was also imprisoned during the Great Purge but was eventually rehabilitated in 1956.
