Mish Krupin: Ukrainian Rap Pioneer
Early Life and InfluencesMish Krupin, born in Kharkiv, Ukraine in May 1981, is widely regarded as the godfather of Ukrainian rap. Although little is known about his early life, Krupin's interest in music began at a young age. He possessed perfect pitch and studied violin and music theory throughout his teenage years. However, his true passion lay in rock music.
At music school, Krupin met fellow musicians Kostya "Kotya" Zhuykov, Dily (of the group TNMK), and Black (of the group Ubitue Rreppm, now U.e.R.Asquad). While pursuing classical music, Krupin became immersed in rap and, at the age of 20, formed the influential project "Dyadya Vasya."
The Birth of Ukrainian Rap
Krupin's initial inspiration came from the rap group Vne Zakona and the Indakhaus festival, where he first heard Black perform. Mentoring from Black and Zhuykov helped Krupin develop his musical style and establish himself as a rapper.
In 2006, Krupin returned to Kyiv to sell his album with Dyadya Vasya. During a concert by rapper Smoky Mo, he reclaimed an old debt of $50. Krupin considers this moment the turning point in his career, as it reignited his popularity and led to collaborations with other artists.
Overcoming Adversity
Krupin's personal life has not been without its challenges. He struggled with drug and alcohol addiction but has since overcome these issues. He now uses vaping occasionally.
Artistic Style and Legacy
Krupin is renowned for his unconventional blend of melody, profanity, and irony. He has been described as a "cheerful man-orchestra" and a "showman" rather than a traditional rapper. His music has evolved over the years, incorporating elements of hip-hop, blues, and rock.
As a respected lyricist, Krupin has collaborated with prominent figures in the Russian rap scene, including Bogdan Titomir, Guf, L'One, and MoT. His official YouTube channel features numerous music videos and live performances, including the popular tracks "Natsi Areni," "Viski So Ldom," and "Doroga."
Controversies and Media Attention
In 2013, Krupin made headlines when Anna Sedokova announced their upcoming marriage. While these claims were later questioned, they brought significant media attention to Sedokova and Krupin.
Current Activities
In 2017, Krupin released the collaborative album "Gorodskie Sluhi" with fellow Ukrainian singer Artem Pivovarov. The album charted in the top 10 on Eatmusic. Krupin has also participated in rap battles, most notably against Maity Di in 2017.
