Early Life and Military Service

Mikhail Alekseyevich Panikakha was born in Ukraine. In 1939, he was conscripted into the Red Army. As part of the Pacific Fleet, he arrived in Stalingrad to defend the city against the invading German forces.

Heroic Battle at the Red October Factory

On October 2, 1942, Panikakha and his comrade, Beder, were positioned in a trench near the Red October factory. German tanks launched an offensive from Mamayev Kurgan, supported by anti-tank guns and artillery fire. Panikakha and his comrades fought back with anti-tank weapons and artillery from across the Volga River.

As the first wave of the enemy attack faltered, the Germans reinforced their offensive with seven tanks and infantry. Panikakha found himself armed with only two bottles of flammable liquid. Undeterred, he crawled forward towards the enemy. An enemy bullet struck one of his bottles, setting him ablaze.

Self-Sacrifice and Victory

Despite the excruciating pain, Panikakha leapt onto the lead tank and burned to death along with its crew. This act of self-sacrifice turned the tide of the battle. The remaining German tanks and infantry retreated in fear.

Panikakha's heroism inspired his comrades, who pursued the enemy and destroyed two more tanks, successfully defending their position.

Recognition and Legacy

Mikhail Panikakha was initially nominated for the title of Hero of the Soviet Union in November 1942. However, he posthumously received the honor only on May 5, 1990, by decree of the President of the USSR. His body was buried in a bomb crater near the Red October factory.

Panikakha's valor became legendary, inspiring songs and poems. His heroic sacrifice during the Battle of Stalingrad stands as a testament to the unwavering spirit of the Soviet people in the face of overwhelming odds.
