Early Life and Military Service
Pavel Mikhailovich Bogatov was born on February 4, 1914, in the village of Tarsa, Saratov Oblast. He completed seven years of schooling and later graduated from the Volsky Livestock Technical College. Bogatov served in the Soviet Army from 1936-1938 and 1940. He also participated in the Finnish War of 1939-1940.
World War II and Fortitude
Following his military service, Bogatov worked as a physics and mathematics teacher. When World War II broke out in July 1941, he returned to the battlefield. He fought on various fronts, including the North-Western, Volkhov, Voronezh, and 1st Ukrainian fronts. Bogatov's bravery and leadership earned him the Order of the Red Star in 1943.
Heroism at the Dnieper
In October 1943, as part of the 136th Rifle Division, Bogatov was tasked with establishing communication across the Dnieper River in Kyiv. Despite enemy air raids and heavy bombardment, he successfully set up the line, ensuring communication between the division and the 358th Rifle Regiment. Bogatov's actions allowed for the coordination of artillery fire, repelling a German counterattack.
Post-War Life and Legacy
After the war, Bogatov retired and returned to his hometown. He graduated from the legal school in 1948 and the Saratov Law Institute in 1954. He worked for the Volsky inter-district prosecutor's office until his death on May 5, 1970. Despite his modesty, Bogatov's wartime heroism is recounted in the records of the conflict, serving as a testament to his unwavering courage and dedication.
