Mist: A Rising Star in British Hip-Hop
Humble BeginningsRapper Rizz Thomas "Mist" Sylvester was born into a Caribbean family in Erdington, Birmingham, England on March 5, 1992. His father was a guitarist who had once performed on Top of the Pops, a television show featuring the UK Singles Chart. From a young age, Mist developed a passion for music, particularly hip-hop, drawn to the likes of Busta Rhymes, The Notorious B.I.G., Snoop Dogg, and Puff Daddy.
Early Influence
After his older brother moved out, Mist took over his bedroom and began experimenting with music equipment, creating beats and rhythms. In an interview with GQ Magazine, Mist stated that around the age of 11 or 12, he realized he wanted to be a musician. "I used to listen to this pirate radio station, one of the ones that used to hype everyone up. That's when I started writing my own lyrics."
Legal Troubles
In March 2012, Mist was fined £80 for possession of marijuana and given a caution. In 2014, he was sentenced to 14 months in prison for dangerous driving and driving without insurance after attempting to evade police on the M6 motorway.
Rise to Fame
Upon his release from prison in 2015, Mist launched his music career in earnest with a series of freestyles and the single "So High" featuring Fredo. The rapper's second EP, "Diamond in the Dirt," peaked at number four on the UK Albums Chart.
Diamond in the Dirt
Mist's 2018 EP, "Diamond in the Dirt," featured collaborations with MoStack, Nines, and Not3s. The project charted at number four on the UK Albums Chart and remained on the chart for six weeks.
Tragic Attack
On August 28, 2019, The Independent reported that Mist had been injured in an armed robbery in Portugal. While vacationing at a luxury villa in the gated community and golf resort of Quinta do Lago in the Algarve, Mist was attacked by robbers who stole his passport, jewelry, and mobile phones. During the raid, Mist was shot in the leg. Two of his friends drove him to the hospital and informed police that the two or three robbers had Irish accents.
