Mayor of Lipetsk

Mikhail Alekseyevich Klyuev was born in Lipetsk to merchant Alexei Gerasimovich Klyuev. His philanthropic efforts were significant throughout his life. At age 55, he was elected Mayor of Lipetsk on January 13, 1903. On November 19, 1912, he was bestowed the honor of "Honorary Citizen of Lipetsk."

Post-Revolutionary Life

After the October Revolution of 1917, Klyuev resigned as Mayor and remained living in Lipetsk. He passed away on November 11, 1924, and was buried in the city's Preobrazhensky cemetery. However, his grave has since been lost.

Accomplishments

Klyuev's tenure as Mayor was marked by numerous infrastructure advancements. He oversaw the construction of a pressurized water supply, a hydroelectric power station on the Lipovka River, a city telephone network, and a large commercial building. Under his leadership, the city welcomed its first polyclinic, movie theater, secondary school, museum, public library, and welfare organization for the poor. He also played a key role in the construction of the Nikolsky Church. The Komsomolsky Pond was created during Klyuev's time as Mayor.

Legacy

Serafim Neverov, a contemporary of Klyuev, wrote in his memoirs:

"In 1911, by order of the Mayor, the dam in this location was disassembled. The bottom was cleared of debris and silt, the reservoir was expanded, and stone embankments were erected. The local population no longer felt comfortable throwing garbage into it or bathing their horses there. Over time, the pond became one of the city's favorite recreation spots."

Klyuev's support for local institutions is exemplified by his patronage of the children's shelter, which had been struggling financially. In 1913, he provided 150 rubles to the shelter, enabling its transformation into the Lipetsk Women's Gymnasium.
