Fahim Dashty: A Life Dedicated to Journalism, Politics, and Resistance
Early Life and Education
Born in the Panjshir province of Afghanistan in 1973, Fahim Dashty belonged to the Tajik ethnic group. He pursued a degree in political science at Kabul University. However, his studies were cut short when he was forced to flee to Iran in 1989 during the Soviet-Afghan War.
Association with Ahmed Shah Massoud
Dashty's close association with Ahmed Shah Massoud, the charismatic leader of the Northern Alliance, led him on a perilous journey across Central Asia. He sought refuge in Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, France, Pakistan, and Iran, frequently moving to evade capture.
Witness to History and Tragedy
In 2001, just two days before the infamous September 11 attacks, Dashty was working on a biography of Massoud when the commander was assassinated in northern Afghanistan. Dashty himself suffered severe injuries, with over 90% of his body burned in the blast.
Post-Conflict Role and Kabul Weekly
After extensive treatment in Paris, Dashty returned to Afghanistan. He founded Kabul Weekly, a trilingual newspaper published from Kabul. Through this platform, he aimed to contribute to the rebuilding of his war-torn country.
Resistance against the Taliban
In 2021, following the Taliban's takeover of Afghanistan, Dashty joined the Panjshir Resistance as its official spokesperson. He was a vocal and courageous advocate for the resistance movement.
Tragic Demise
On September 6, 2021, Fahim Dashty fell victim to the Taliban's offensive in Panjshir. His untimely demise left a profound void in the Afghan resistance movement.
