Mohammed Shtayyeh

Mohammed Shtayyeh is a Palestinian economist, academic, and politician who has served as Prime Minister of the State of Palestine since March 10, 2019.

Early Life and Education

Shtayyeh was born in the village of Talluza, Nablus Governorate, in 1958. He earned a bachelor's degree in business administration and economics from Birzeit University in 1976–1981. In 1989, he completed a Ph.D. in economics from the University of Sussex in the United Kingdom.

Political Career

Shtayyeh joined the Fatah movement in the 1980s. He served as Minister of Public Works and Housing and later as Minister of the Interior from 2019–2022. In 2009, he became Minister of the Palestinian Economic Council for Development and Reconstruction.

As Prime Minister

On March 10, 2019, Shtayyeh was appointed Prime Minister by President Mahmoud Abbas. His cabinet was sworn in on April 13, 2019, and primarily consists of members of Fatah. Other parties, such as the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine, declined to participate due to the government's lack of unification with the Islamist group Hamas.

Positions and Publications

Shtayyeh is a supporter of a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. He is also an active negotiator and has authored numerous publications on economics, political science, and history.

Academic Roles

Shtayyeh has been a lecturer at Birzeit University. He is known for his research and writing on economic development and the political economy of the Middle East.
