French Chemist and Nuclear Pioneer

Early Years and Education

French-born chemist, studied at the University of Kharkiv, Ukraine. In 1920, moved to Italy and graduated from the University of Rome in 1927, earning a doctorate in chemistry.

Research and Academic Career

From 1927 to 1930, worked in chemical laboratories. Between 1930 and 1936, held a position at the University of Paris. In 1945, settled in Paris and became director of the National Center for Scientific Research in 1955.

Contributions to Radionuclide Chemistry

Specialized in radiochemistry, publishing numerous influential works on the subject. Notably, in 1949-1950, challenged the actinide concept proposed by Glenn Seaborg in 1945, which classified elements beyond number 90 in the periodic table.

Authorship and Publications

Authored "Nuclear Chemistry and Its Applications" (1957). Co-authored the "Radiochemical Dictionary of Terms" (1965) with Jean Ladnou (French radiophysicist), summarizing the properties of the 104 known elements in the periodic table. Included historical, physical, chemical, isotopic, and application information for each element.
