Early Life and Education
Myroslav Viktorovych Guloyan was born on September 19, 1940, in Odessa, Ukraine. He received his undergraduate degree with honors in chemistry from Odessa State University in 1964, where he also completed his postgraduate studies.
Academic and Research Career
After completing his military service, Guloyan defended his PhD dissertation in 1976. He worked as a senior research fellow, head of department, and deputy director for scientific work at the Institute of Physical Chemistry of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR. In 1984, he became the director of the institute.
In 1988, Guloyan was elected an academician of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine (NASU). He served as chairman of the Southern Scientific Center and as a member of the Presidium of NASU.
From 1998, Guloyan headed the Department of Pharmaceutical Chemistry at Odessa State University and was the scientific director of the Chemical-Pharmaceutical Educational-Scientific-Production Complex of NASU and the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine.
Scientific Interests and Contributions
Guloyan's research focused on the development of synthesis methods, structure, conformations, physiological activity, and mechanisms of action of biologically active compounds. His work led to the creation of theoretical foundations for the directed synthesis of psychoactive drugs.
He conducted extensive research on the relationship between structure, stereochemistry, and properties of heterocyclic compounds with psychotropic effects. This resulted in the synthesis of highly effective and low-toxicity tranquilizers, antihypoxic agents, and actoprotectors with unique pharmacological properties.
Based on his research, Guloyan developed and introduced the first domestic tranquilizer, hypnotic, and anticonvulsant drug phenazepam, as well as the daytime tranquilizer gidazepam.
