Mona Barthel is a professional German tennis player, who has achieved victories in three singles and one doubles tournament at the International Tennis Federation (ITF) level. She was born in Bad Segeberg, Germany, to Wolfgang Barthel and his wife. Wolfgang himself was actively involved in sports and even won a shot put competition at the European Junior Athletics Championships in Paris in 1970.
Early Career
In July 2007, Mona made her debut in the ITF tournament in Frinton. She successfully qualified for the main draw and reached the quarterfinals, where she lost to Jade Curtis. The following year, Mona returned to Frinton and reached the final, but was unable to overcome Tara Moore's skills. She also experienced another unsuccessful final in the $10,000 tournament in Gausdal, where she was defeated by her compatriot, Svenja Weidemann.
Success in Doubles
Mona teamed up with Svenja Weidemann for the doubles tournament in Gausdal and they reached the final, but were defeated by Tegan Edwards and Marcella Koek. It wasn't until January 2010 that Mona won her first ITF tournament, defeating Anne Kremer and earning a $10,000 prize. In February of the same year, she reached the doubles final again, this time with Carmen Klaschka, but they lost to Stephanie Cohen-Aloro and Selima Sfar.
Continued Success
In April 2010, Mona achieved another singles victory at the Torhout tournament. Shortly after, she won the doubles tournament with Justine Ozga, defeating Hana Birnerova and Ekaterina Bychkova. In 2011, Mona started the year with a victory in another ITF tournament and reached the final of another. She also successfully qualified for the French Open, where she won her first-round match against Sybille Bammer but lost to Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova in the second round. She then reached the semifinals of the e-Boks Sony Ericsson Open, where she was defeated by Caroline Wozniacki.
