Early Life and Education

Movsēs Hakopyan was born on February 4, 1965, in the village of Chartar, Martuni, NKAO. He completed his secondary education in Chartar in 1982 and enrolled in the Higher Army Command School in Alma-Ata, Kazakhstan, where he specialized in "Command, Combat, Tracked and Wheeled Vehicles."

Military Career in the Soviet Army

After graduating in 1986, Hakopyan served in the 553rd Motorized Rifle Regiment of the Transcaucasian Military District. From 1987 to 1988, he served in the Soviet troops deployed in Afghanistan as the deputy commander of a motorized rifle company.

Military Career in Karabakh

In 1988, Hakopyan was transferred to the 366th Motorized Rifle Regiment stationed in Stepanakert, where he served until 1992. He held various positions, including commander of a motorized rifle platoon and company commander.

Following the outbreak of the First Karabakh War, Hakopyan played a significant role in organizing and commanding units in the defense of Karabakh. He held positions such as commander of the Chartar battalion, deputy commander of the Shushi Operational Region, and commander of the Monteaberd defensive area.

Command and Leadership Roles

From 1993 to 1999, Hakopyan commanded the 2nd Defensive Region of Martuni and the Askeran Defensive Region. He also served as deputy for combat operations of the Karabakh Army and first deputy commander of the Karabakh Army.

Minister of Defense of the Nagorno-Karabakh Republic

On May 11, 2007, Hakopyan was appointed Minister of Defense and Commander of the Nagorno-Karabakh Army by the president of the Nagorno-Karabakh Republic.
