Biography of Muhammad Hakim
Muhammad Hakim (born in 1940) is a military and political figure in Afghanistan, and a general. He belongs to the Pashtun tribe of Muhammadzai, which is part of the Durrani tribal confederation, to which the royal family of Afghanistan also belongs. He is also known as a Sardar, which means prince or noble. Hakim graduated from the Military Academy in Kabul and obtained further military education in the United States.
Early Career
Hakim began his career as a military officer in the Afghan Army. In 1965, he joined the People's Democratic Party of Afghanistan (PDPA) and was associated with the "Parcham" faction. After the PDPA came to power in 1978 following the April (Saur) Revolution, Hakim became the Chief of the Political Department of the Ministry of Interior. However, in the same year, he was arrested and imprisoned in Pul-e-Charkhi prison.
Imprisonment and Release
During his imprisonment, Hakim endured physical torture and psychological pressure from his interrogators. In an interview with the newspaper "Soviet Sport" in August 1988, he described the ordeal of being threatened with execution multiple times, only to be brought back to his cell at the last moment. Hakim was eventually released from prison after the Soviet Union deployed troops to Afghanistan in December 1979. However, he bore the physical and emotional scars of the torture he had endured.
Political Career
After his release, Hakim continued his political career within the PDPA. In 1980, he became the Deputy Head of the Defense and Justice Department of the Central Committee of the PDPA under General Abdul Qadir. He was recommended by General Vladimir Cheremnykh, the Chief Military Advisor of the Soviet Union in Afghanistan, for the position of Deputy Chief of Staff. However, Hakim was not allowed to leave his current position by Abdul Qadir.
Later Years
In 1981, Hakim assumed the role of Head of the Defense and Justice Department and was appointed as the representative of the Central Committee of the PDPA and the Revolutionary Council of the Democratic Republic of Afghanistan (DRA) for the "West" zone. In 1986, he was included in the Central Committee of the PDPA. From December 4, 1986, he served as the Deputy Prime Minister of Afghanistan. In 1988-1989, Hakim served as the Mayor of Kabul, where he focused on ensuring the city's food supply and expressed intentions to develop the construction industry. However, the ongoing political instability and frequent shelling of the city hindered the efforts of the government representatives.
