Early Life and Education
Murat Zhurinov, a distinguished Kazakhstani scientist and chemist, was born in 1941 in Arys, South Kazakhstan Region. In 1964, he graduated from the Kazakh Chemical and Technological Institute as an engineer-technologist. He then pursued his postgraduate studies at the Moscow Chemical and Technological Institute, completing his degree in 1970.
Academic Career
Professor Zhurinov served as a lecturer at the Kazakh Chemical and Technological Institute from 1970 to 1982. He held the position of Pro-Rector at the Karaganda State University from 1982 to 1985. Subsequently, he became the Director of the Institute of Organic Synthesis and Carbon Chemistry of the National Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Kazakhstan (1985-1991).
Leadership Roles
From 1991 to 1995, Professor Zhurinov was the President of the International Kazakhstan-Turkish University named after A. Yassawi. In 1993, he was appointed Chairman of the Turkestan Scientific Center of the Yuko Republic of Kazakhstan. From 1995 to 1997, he served as Minister of Education of the Republic of Kazakhstan.
Return to Academia
After completing his term as Minister of Education, Professor Zhurinov returned to the International Kazakhstan-Turkish University named after A. Yassawi as its President from 1997 to 2001. From 2001 to 2003, he served as Director of the Institute of Organic Catalysis and Electrochemistry of the National Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Kazakhstan.
President of the National Academy of Sciences
In October 2003, Professor Zhurinov was elected President of the National Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Kazakhstan. He has held this esteemed position to date.
Research Contributions
Professor Zhurinov is a highly accomplished scientist whose primary research interests lie in electrochemistry. His significant contributions have advanced the understanding of the electrochemical behavior of diverse organic compounds and the development of innovative methods for their synthesis. His work has focused on creating physiologically active substances, particularly those derived from natural sources.
Honors and Recognition
Professor Zhurinov holds prestigious titles and memberships. He is a Doctor of Chemical Sciences (1981), a Professor (1981), and a member of the former Academy of Sciences of the Kazakh Soviet Socialist Republic (1989). Since 1994, he has been an Academician of the National Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Kazakhstan. Additionally, he is an Academician of the International Academy of Higher Education (1995), the International Engineering Academy (1995), and the New York Academy of Sciences (1997). He has also earned 92 inventions to his credit.
