Early Life and Musical Roots

Born in Vienna on November 7, 1981, to Turkish parents, Murathan Muslu grew up in the multicultural Ottakring district. As a child, he displayed a rebellious streak and switched schools frequently. His passion for music surpassed academics, leading him to form the hip-hop group Sua Kaan with friends at age 15.

From Hip-Hop to Film

In 2010, Sua Kaan released their debut album, "Aus Eigenkraft," and received a nomination for the Austrian Amadeus Music Award. It was during this time that director Umut Dag approached Muslu for a role in his short film "Papa," sparking Muslu's acting career.

Breakthrough with "The Second Wife"

Muslu's first feature film role came in Dag's "The Second Wife" (2012), where he played a Turkish-Austrian man caught in a sham marriage and hiding his homosexuality. The film premiered at the Berlinale and garnered international acclaim.

Dramatic Acclaim with "Concrete"

Muslu solidified his reputation as a powerful dramatic actor with his portrayal of Ercan in "Concrete" (2015), his third collaboration with Umut Dag. The film explored a father's struggle to keep his son from following his criminal footsteps, and earned Muslu the Austrian Film Award for Best Actor.

Versatile Roles in Film and Television

Muslu's versatility was evident in his wide-ranging roles. He played a bumbling con man in the comedy "A Horse on the Balcony" and a charming fireman in "Damn Anne Molnar." However, crime dramas and detective thrillers remained his forte, with notable roles in "Schnell ermittelt" and "CopStories."

"Horizons" and "Pelikanblut"

In 2019, Muslu returned to his hip-hop roots with the Netflix series "Skylines," where he portrayed a rapper and music producer. He also starred in the social drama-mystic thriller "Pelikanblut" as a secret lover.

Current Projects and "Hinterland"

Muslu continues to add to his filmography, most recently with the expressionist detective film "Hinterland: City of Sin." Directed by Stefan Ruzowitzky, the film transports viewers back to post-World War I Austria, where Muslu portrays Peter Perg, a traumatized detective investigating a series of gruesome murders.
