Early Life and Education

Mukhtar Ashrafi was born on June 11, 1912, in Bukhara, Uzbekistan. His musical journey began at the Bukhara Music College, where he studied the traditional Uzbek instrument, the dutar. In 1929, he enrolled at the Samarkand Institute of Music, Theater, and Choreography, and later at the Moscow Conservatory.

Career as Composer and Conductor

Ashrafi's creative endeavors commenced in 1930, and he began conducting soon after. He held various leadership positions at the Samarkand Radio and the Uzbek State Opera and Ballet Theater. In 1943, he became the director of the latter, a post he held until 1947.

Artistic Leadership

From 1947 to 1962, Ashrafi directed the Tashkent Conservatory's opera preparation department and served as the theater's chief conductor. He subsequently assumed the helm of the Samarkand Opera and Ballet Theater (1964-66). In 1966, he became the director, artistic director, and chief conductor of the Uzbek State Academic Opera and Ballet Theater in Tashkent.

Later Years and Recognition

Ashrafi was active in the Union of Composers of the USSR and Uzbekistan, serving as a member of the boards. He also authored a memoir, "Music in My Life," which was published in 1975. After his passing on December 15, 1975, the Tashkent Conservatory was renamed in his honor.
