Biography of Vladislav Zelenksy

Vladislav Zelenksy was a Polish composer and pianist. He received his initial musical education in Krakow, where he studied under the guidance of composer Franciszek Miryski. Zelenksy furthered his studies in Prague from 1859 to 1866, learning from prominent musicians such as Alexander Dreyschock (piano) and Josef Krejci (composition). Seeking to refine his compositional skills, he traveled to Paris from 1866 to 1870 to study with Napoleon Reber and Berthold Damcke.

After returning to his homeland, Zelenksy worked in Krakow for some time before assuming the position of harmony and counterpoint professor at the Warsaw Conservatory in 1872 following the death of Stanislaw Moniuszko. In 1881, he returned to Krakow and served as the conductor of the city orchestra from 1882 to 1885. In 1888, Zelenksy became one of the founding members of the Krakow Conservatory and remained its director until his death.

Among Zelenksy's notable students in Krakow was Zygmunt Stojowski. He composed several operas, including "Konrad Wallenrod" (1884), "Goplana" (1891), "Janek" (1900), and "The Old Tale" (1906). Zelenksy also wrote two symphonies (1872, 1912), string quartets, and other chamber compositions. His works include art songs set to the poetry of Adam Mickiewicz, Vladislav Syrokomla, and other Polish poets, as well as texts from the Kralodvorsky Manuscript.
