Early Life and Education

Myrtle Clare Bachelder was born on March 13, 1908, in Orange, Massachusetts. She earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Middlebury College in 1930 and subsequently taught physics, chemistry, and biology at a school in South Hadley Falls, Massachusetts. She went on to obtain a Master of Education degree from Boston University.

Involvement in the Manhattan Project

In November 1942, Bachelder enlisted in the Women's Army Corps (WAC) in Springfield, Massachusetts. After training at military bases across the United States, she was assigned to the Manhattan Engineer District. In October 1943, she arrived at the secret Los Alamos, New Mexico, laboratory as part of a group of 15-20 WACs.

At Los Alamos, Bachelder was responsible for determining the isotopic content of uranium using spectroscopy. Her critical role in providing nuclear materials for the Little Boy atomic bomb, dropped on Hiroshima on August 9, 1945, earned her a significant place in the Manhattan Project.

Post-War Life

Despite the devastation caused by the atomic bombings, Bachelder believed that her involvement was justified. She argued that the bombs ended the war and prevented further casualties from a land invasion of Japan.

After the war, Bachelder advocated against the May-Johnson Bill, which sought to give the military control over atomic energy. She supported the McMahon Atomic Energy Act instead, which established civilian control over the nation's nuclear program.

In the 1960s, Bachelder worked at the James Franck Institute in Chicago, where she continued to emphasize the importance of nuclear arms control. She retired in 1973 and passed away on May 22, 1997.

Legacy

Myrtle Clare Bachelder's role in the Manhattan Project has been the subject of controversy and debate. However, her dedication to science and her belief in the necessity of nuclear arms control for international security left a lasting impact on the atomic age.
