Biography of Nadezhda Khnykina

Nadezhda Khnykina, a Soviet athlete, began her sports career at a young age with great promise. At the age of 16, she became the youngest medalist in the Soviet Union Championships. This achievement came in the 1949 national championship in the 200m race, where the young debutant finished second only to the famous Evgeniya Sechenova.

Early Success

In just a month after her debut, Nadezhda became an official record holder in the USSR. At the competitions in Tbilisi, she set an all-Union record in the long jump. In 1951, Nadezhda Khnykina became the champion of the Soviet Union in both sprinting distances. In the 100m race, the 18-year-old athlete also set a national record of 11.8 seconds, surpassing the record set by Evgeniya Sechenova, who won the gold medal at the European Championships in Oslo.

World Record Holder

In the same season, Khnykina became a world record holder in two events: the 60m sprint and the 4x200m relay. She held the title of world record holder for ten years until 1960 when she retired from her sports career.

Olympic Achievements

In 1952, Nadezhda Khnykina, who had just turned 19, participated in her first Olympic Games. While the unfamiliarity and intense emotion of the Olympic stage affected many athletes negatively, Khnykina proved to be unfazed. She performed consistently and gave her best effort. As a result, she finished 4th in the 4x100m relay, missing out on a medal by only 0.1 seconds. She also won a bronze medal in the 200m race, where she set a new all-Union record, improving the previous record by 0.6 seconds and becoming the first Olympic medalist among Soviet sprinters.

Continued Success and Retirement

Four years later, Nadezhda Dvalishvili-Khnykina, who by then was a four-time Soviet champion, repeated her success by winning another bronze Olympic medal, this time in the long jump event. Unfortunately, shortly after, Nadezhda ended her sports career.
