Early Life and Education

Naeem Khan was born and raised in Mumbai, India. Growing up, he was surrounded by art, architecture, and objects of history and design. As a child, he learned about textiles from his grandfather and father, who created intricate garments for members of the royal family. His grandfather started his clothing business in the 1930s, and Khan's earliest memories were playing with yards of rich fabrics scattered around the house, using wooden spools to make toys. He had a happy childhood and a large, loving family. Khan was the captain of his school sports team, and he and his friends often played cricket after classes. He maintains warm relationships with his younger siblings to this day.

Move to the United States

As a young man, Khan moved to the United States to pursue his education in fashion design. He enrolled at the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City, where he studied under the renowned American designer, Halston. Khan immersed himself in his craft, adapting to the different fashion sensibilities of the United States. He learned the art of draping and fabric cutting with a modern, understated approach, aiming to create clean, elegant, and timeless silhouettes. Combining this design philosophy with the knowledge gained from his family business, Khan developed his own distinctive style.

Meeting his Wife

The story of Khan's meeting with his wife, Ranjana, is intriguing. Despite growing up just steps away from each other in India, they only met in New York City. They even attended the same school but were in different classes. Ranjana began her modeling career in India, and Khan often saw her face on billboards, hoping to meet her someday. Soon, she moved to New York and crossed paths with her future husband. It was love at first sight, and the couple got married a year after their meeting.

Establishing his Brand

Starting in the early 1980s, Khan released clothing under the label 'Riazee'. For over a decade, he created cocktail and evening dresses under this brand, establishing himself as a talented designer. In 2003, Khan launched a unique collection under his own name, which was sold in high-end stores such as Bergdorf Goodman, Neiman Marcus, and Saks Fifth Avenue. Since then, his impeccably tailored, refined, and elegant dresses under the new brand 'Naeem Khan' have adorned some of the world's most stylish women.

Recognition and Success

Naeem Khan's designs have been worn by celebrities like Christina Hendricks, Beyonce, Taylor Swift, Jennifer Lopez, Emily Blunt, and Michelle Obama, among others. Michelle Obama captivated everyone with her grace and sense of style when she appeared in a strapless, silver-embroidered gown designed by Khan at a state dinner. Since 2008, Khan has been a member of the prestigious Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA). Today, his ready-to-wear clothing and bridal collections are sold in over 100 department stores and specialty boutiques worldwide.
