BBC Career
Winton made history as the first woman to deliver the news on British television. Despite the prevailing societal norms that marginalized women in broadcasting, she remained the solitary female newsreader for the BBC until 1975. Her contributions extended beyond newscasting, with involvement in the production of programs such as Town and Around and Panorama.
Later Life
After her pioneering career at the BBC, Winton retired to a quieter life. However, tragedy struck in May 2019, when she passed away at the age of 94 in the town of Bridport. According to local police, she had suffered from declining health in recent years, experiencing frequent falls. In the days leading up to her death, she was hospitalized with a fractured hip, which necessitated surgery. Unfortunately, her condition deteriorated, and she was transferred to intensive care due to complications with her heart, kidneys, and respiratory system.
Cause of Death
Medical professionals attributed Winton's demise to a combination of cardiac failure, hypertension, and general frailty associated with advanced age. Her passing marked the end of an era, as she was the last surviving female newsreader from the early days of the BBC.
