Biography of Nancy Spungen

Nancy Spungen was the girlfriend of Sid Vicious, the bassist of the American band Sex Pistols. She was a controversial figure among the musicians and fans of Sex Pistols. Nancy Spungen was born in the town of Moreland, Pennsylvania, USA. She came from a middle-class Jewish family, with her father being a businessman and her mother owning her own health food store called The Earth Shop (Nancy often helped her mother at the store). As a child, she was highly intellectual but also hyperactive. She displayed aggression towards her younger sister Susan and her brother David. She even threatened to kill her nanny and attacked her mother with a hammer during an argument. At the age of 11, she was expelled from public schooling and received psychological help. At 14, she made several suicide attempts. In April 1974, at the age of 16, she graduated from Devereux High School and then enrolled at the University of Colorado in Boulder. However, she was expelled five months later. Spungen left home at the age of 17 and went to New York City. She followed bands like Aerosmith, New York Dolls, and Ramones. In 1977, at the age of 19, she arrived in London to pursue Jerry Nolan of New York Dolls and Heartbreakers, but instead, she met the Sex Pistols. When the band's leader, vocalist Johnny Rotten, rejected her, she pursued bassist Sid Vicious, and soon they became a couple. During their tumultuous two-year relationship, Nancy and Sid indulged in heroin and other drugs. After Sex Pistols disbanded in 1978, Spungen and Vicious moved to the Chelsea Hotel in New York City. There, a tired and disillusioned Sid tried to continue his music career. Over the next few months, Sid and Nancy heavily abused drugs. Their relationship came to an end on October 12, 1978, when Nancy was found lying on the bathroom floor of their hotel room, wearing only black lingerie. She bled to death from a single stab wound to the abdomen, later determined to be inflicted by Sid. Vicious was immediately arrested for murder. There are several theories that suggest Spungen was killed by one of two drug dealers who visited their apartment that night. There were reports of a robbery, as some belongings and money were missing. One of the suspected killers was Rockets Redglare, a drug dealer, bouncer, porn actor, and later a stand-up comedian. It was established that he was with Nancy that night and brought 40 capsules of hydromorphone. Redglare vehemently denied any involvement in Nancy Spungen's murder. He stated that another dealer who was also present that evening left before him to get more heroin. He claimed that the other dealer found Vicious high and tried to steal the remaining drugs, resulting in an argument with Nancy. There was also a version suggesting that Nancy's death was the result of suicide.
