Fiame Naomi Mata'afa: Samoa's First Female Prime Minister
Early Life and Political CareerFiame Naomi Mata'afa was born into a family of Samoan matai (chiefs). She has served as a Member of Parliament for the Lotofaga constituency since 1985. Her political affiliation began with the Human Rights Protection Party (HRPP), which dominated Samoan politics from 1982 to 2021.
Ministerial Roles
Mata'afa made history as the first woman to hold government positions in Samoa. She served under Prime Ministers Tofilau Eti Alesana and Tuila'epa Sa'ilele Malielegaoi, holding offices such as Minister of Education (1991-2006), Minister of Women's Affairs (2006-2011), and Minister of Justice (2011-2016).
Vice Prime Minister and Party Leadership

2021 Election and Constitutional Crisis
FAST won the 2021 parliamentary elections, but incumbent Prime Minister Malielegaoi refused to concede defeat, triggering a constitutional crisis. The Court of Appeals resolved the impasse on July 23, 2021, recognizing Mata'afa as the legitimate head of government effective May 24.
