Natalia Zhukova: A Chess Prodigy
Natalia Zhukova, a Ukrainian chess prodigy, was born in Dresden, Germany, to a Soviet military family. Growing up in Kakhovka, she quickly demonstrated her exceptional chess skills.
Early Successes and Rise to the Top
At the tender age of 14, Zhukova emerged victorious at the European Under-14 Championship in Szombathely. Just a year later, she repeated her triumph at the European Under-16 Championships in Băile Herculane, and went on to claim the World Under-16 Championship in Szeged.
In her homeland, Zhukova also proved to be a formidable opponent. She shared first place in the Ukrainian Women's Championship in 1996. On the international stage, she continued her winning streak, claiming victories in Belgrade and Groningen in 1998.
European Champion and Grandmaster
In 2000, Zhukova ascended to the pinnacle of her career by defeating Ekaterina Kovalevskaya in the final of the 1st European Women's Championship in Batumi. She was crowned the European Women's Champion.
Her achievements continued with a victory at the Krasnoturyinsk Women's Tournament in 2003. In 2015, she once again proved her mettle by winning the European Individual Championship in Chakvi, Georgia, for the second time in her career.
National Team and Political Aspirations
Zhukova has been a mainstay in the Ukrainian women's national chess team since 1996. In 1995, she was awarded the International Master for Women (WIM) title by FIDE, followed by the Woman Grandmaster (WGM) title in 1997 and the Grandmaster title in 2010.
Beyond chess, she ventured into politics, running as a candidate for the Ukrainian parliament in 2019 on the Movement of New Forces party's ticket.
Personal Life
Zhukova was married to Russian chess player Alexander Grischuk, and they welcomed a daughter in 2007.
