Biography of Nathan Fillion

Nathan Fillion is an American actor of Canadian origin. He gained fame primarily through his roles in the TV series "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" and "Firefly".

Early Life

Fillion was born in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. His parents, Cookie and Bob Fillion, are retired English teachers. Nathan has an older brother named Jeff. He attended Holy Trinity Catholic High School, Concordia University College of Alberta, and the University of Alberta. According to Fillion, he is a descendant of Confederate Lieutenant General Jubal A. Early. His ancestry also includes Franco-Canadians and Irish.

Career

After working in theater and appearing in several Canadian TV and film projects, Fillion moved to New York in 1994. He then starred in the soap opera "One Life to Live" as Joey Buchanan, for which he was nominated for an Emmy Award in 1996. He left the series in 1997 to pursue other projects, although he returned for a few episodes in 2007. Moving to Los Angeles, he had a supporting role in the sitcom "Two Guys, a Girl and a Pizza Place" and in the film "Saving Private Ryan" as James Frederick Ryan. In 2002, Fillion played the role of Captain Malcolm Reynolds in Joss Whedon's sci-fi TV series "Firefly". He received the Cinescape Genre Face of the Future - Male award from the Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy & Horror Films for this role. Although the TV series was canceled in 2003, a film adaptation titled "Serenity" was released in 2005, in which Fillion reprised his role.

In the final season of Joss Whedon's "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" TV series, Fillion portrayed the secondary character Caleb. According to Fillion, his time on the set of "Firefly" was the most enjoyable of all TV series he has worked on.

Later Career

After the end of "Firefly", actress Jewel Staite nicknamed Fillion "Captain Tight Pants". This nickname has stuck with him ever since. Fillion also voiced a supporting character in the animated series "King of the Hill" and the character Gao the Lesser in the video game "Jade Empire". In 2006, Fillion starred in the horror film "Slither" as Sheriff Bill Pardy, for which he received a nomination for a Fangoria Chainsaw Award. He also played the lead role in the romantic comedy "Waitress" and the horror film "White Noise 2: The Light" in 2007.

Fillion's filmography includes various TV shows and films such as "Spin City", "Total Security", "Pasadena", "Desperate Housewives", and "Castle", in which he played the role of Richard Castle.
