Early Career: Stenhousemuir and LivingstonNeil Alexander, born on March 10, 1978, in Edinburgh, Scotland, began his professional football career in 1996 with Stenhousemuir. Two years later, he moved to Livingston, making his debut on October 3, 1998, against Partick Thistle. Alexander's stellar play contributed to the Lions' victory in the Scottish Second Division that season.
Cardiff City: A Welsh Adventure
In 2001, Cardiff City signed Alexander for £200,000. He made his debut on August 11 of the same year against Wycombe Wanderers. Alexander played a crucial role in Cardiff's promotion to the Championship in 2003.
Negotiations and a Cardiff Departure
During the 2006/07 season, Alexander negotiated a contract extension with Cardiff but was unsuccessful. As a result, he left the club at the end of the season on a free transfer. His final appearance for the Bluebirds came against Sunderland on March 31, 2007.
Ipswich Town and a Return to Scotland
On July 16, 2007, Alexander joined Ipswich Town, becoming their first-choice goalkeeper. He made his Ipswich debut on August 11 against Sheffield Wednesday. On January 30, 2008, he returned to Scotland, signing a three-and-a-half-year deal with Rangers.
Old Firm Debut and a Scottish Cup Triumph
Alexander's Rangers debut came on February 3, 2008, due to an injury to Allan McGregor. He made his Old Firm debut on April 16, replacing McGregor who had suffered a knock. Alexander's impressive performances helped Rangers win the Scottish Cup and reach the UEFA Cup final that season.
Ups and Downs at Rangers
In the following season, Alexander lost his place in the starting lineup to McGregor. However, in April 2009, he was recalled after McGregor's suspension. Alexander seized this opportunity, leading Rangers to a Scottish Cup victory and a league title that season.
