Nelly Geraghty was a 79-year-old widow who tragically lost her life at the hands of a drug addict. She was found lying face down in the dirt, just 100 meters away from her home, clutching onto the strap of her handbag. Nelly was rushed to the hospital with a serious head injury and a heart attack, but she never regained consciousness and passed away.
A Life of Independence
Nelly Geraghty, a 79-year-old widow, met her untimely demise after a drug addict stole her handbag containing £100, her late husband's ashes, and a wedding photograph, and brutally attacked her. Nelly, who lived alone in a bungalow at a retirement home on Shaw Street in Oldham, Greater Manchester, was described by everyone as an "active and independent" woman. However, her longing for her deceased husband, Frank, who had passed away in the mid-1990s, was so strong that she carried his ashes in her handbag whenever she left the house.
A Brutal Attack
Nelly's attack was so vicious that she lost consciousness and suffered a severe head injury, requiring intensive care treatment. The prosecution stated that the defendant, Mark Royle, who delivered at least one heavy blow to the frail old lady, did so with the intention of causing substantial harm. Peter Wright, the Royal Advocate, said that the jury would hear from a neuropathologist who would testify that the head injury was caused by "serious violence" that resulted in brain damage.
A Desperate Act
Nelly's close relative had repeatedly warned her not to carry large amounts of money with her. Therefore, the £130-£200 in her handbag was quite unusual. The last time she was seen, she was walking toward a neighbor's house with the bag on her right shoulder, on her usual route to have lunch with other residents of the retirement home. Minutes later, Royle viciously attacked her and snatched her handbag with all its contents. Wright said, "In any event, this is a case of a callous assault on a vulnerable and elderly lady, who suffered serious injuries that ultimately led to her death."
A Suspicious Presence
On the day of the attack, Royle was spotted riding a bicycle in the city center, not far from the local CCTV station. Witnesses also saw him leaving the crime scene. It was revealed that Royle, in a desperate state, tried to sell his mountain bike later that day to acquire money for drugs. He had left his friend's house in the morning and returned within an hour with a substantial amount of money, including £20 notes. However, no reports of thefts were made that day. Wright added, "Furthermore, upon his return, Royle appeared to be concerned about his appearance and was very keen to change his clothes." According to the records on his mobile phone, he contacted a drug dealer after stealing the handbag and then left Shaw to meet another drug addict in Manchester. The latter recalled how Royle showed him a significant amount of money and asked him to join him in buying a dose of drugs.
In Court
Appearing in court, Royle refused to plead guilty to murder and instead opted for an alternative charge of manslaughter and robbery. He claimed that he was under the influence of heavy drugs when he committed the crime, with the sole intention of obtaining money for a new dose. The trial is ongoing.
