Horan learned to play the guitar at a young age. His parents, Bobby and Maura Gallagher, divorced in 1998 when Niall was five years old. He and his older brother Greg moved back and forth between their mother and father before deciding to settle with their father in Mullingar. The X Factor and Formation of One Direction

In 2010, when Niall turned sixteen, he decided to try his luck on the talent show 'The X Factor'. He went through several rounds of auditions, culminating in a performance in front of judges including Simon Cowell and Katy Perry in Dublin. Horan chose the song 'So Sick' by American singer Ne-Yo and made it into the official competition. As a solo artist, Horan reached the semi-finals of 'The X Factor' but was eventually eliminated. However, the far-sighted judges helped Niall form a group with four other contestants: Harry Styles, Louis Tomlinson, Liam Payne, and Zayn Malik. The newly-formed group was named 'One Direction'. Although 'One Direction' did not win 'The X Factor' final, they signed a record deal with Simon Cowell's label 'Syco' and released their debut album 'Up All Night'. The album became a bestseller in the UK in 2011 and in the US in 2012. 'One Direction' is credited with reviving the concept of boy bands and is recognized as part of the new 'British invasion' in the US.

Personal Life and Influences

Niall Horan is the only member of 'One Direction' who was born outside of England and is the second youngest member of the boy band. He has cited classic swing music and vocalist Michael Bublé as his inspirations. Niall, often described as the "boy next door," is a blonde with a pleasant appearance. Rumors have linked him romantically with actresses Demi Lovato and Freya Mavor, but Horan has chosen not to confirm these rumors.
