Robert Wreeden: Russian Émigré, Translator, and Publisher
Early Life and Military ServiceRobert Wreeden was born into the family of Robert Robertovich Wreeden, a physician. On September 7, 1916, he joined the Naval Cadet Corps. He became an active participant in the White movement during the Russian Civil War.
Wreeden arrived in the Northwestern Army from Finland after July 2, 1919. He initially served in the crew of the armored train "Admiral Kolchak." Later, he joined the newly formed Tank Battalion and fought as a machine gunner on the heavy tank "Captain Krumi" during the second offensive on Petrograd. He participated in battles near Gatchina and Tsarskoye Selo.
Emigration and Military Service Continued
In January 1920, Wreeden joined the Russian minesweeper "Kitoboy" as a stoker, which was headed for the Black Sea to join the White Fleet. He sailed with the "Kitoboy" until Copenhagen. There, he boarded an American cargo ship bound for New York.
Wreeden subsequently emigrated to the United States and settled there. He became a member of the Society of Former Russian Naval Officers in America.
Writing and Translation
Wreeden wrote a book of memoirs titled "The Unmaking of a Russian." He also translated works from Russian into English, including Mark Aldanov's novel "The Beginning of the End," Tikhon Polner's book "Tolstoy and His Wife," and the memoirs of Soviet defector Mikhail Koryakov.
Publishing Career
From 1951 to 1955, Wreeden served as the director of the Chekhov Publishing House in New York. This venture aimed to promote Russian literature and culture abroad.
Death and Legacy
Robert Wreeden passed away on August 6, 1955. He was buried at the cemetery of the New Diveyevo Monastery. His contributions as a translator and publisher played a significant role in preserving and disseminating Russian cultural heritage in the West.
