Early Life and Career
Nick Dudman, a renowned British makeup artist, special effects expert, animator, and visual effects artist, was born and raised in England. While attending art college and pursuing a degree in film and television production, Dudman realized his true passion lay in special effects. Driven by this newfound interest, he boldly included imaginary special effects skills on his resume, securing his first job in the industry.
Collaboration with Stuart Freeborn and Early Film Contributions
In 1979, Dudman entered the film industry as an apprentice to the legendary British makeup artist Stuart Freeborn on the set of "Star Wars: Episode V – The Empire Strikes Back." Together, they created the iconic Yoda puppet. For nearly four years, Dudman worked closely with Freeborn, honing his skills on projects such as "Superman II," "Top Secret!," and "Star Wars: Episode VI – Return of the Jedi."
Work with Dick Smith and "The Hunger"
Dudman's talent caught the attention of American makeup artist Dick Smith, who invited him to assist on the film "The Hunger." There, he played a crucial role in aging David Bowie by over 100 years and creating numerous gory special effects. He also led the British makeup team on Ridley Scott's "Legend."
Collaborations with Neil Jordan and "The Fifth Element"
Dudman collaborated with director Neil Jordan on several films, including "Mona Lisa," "High Spirits," "The Miracle," and "Interview with the Vampire." In 1995, he led a 55-person team of artists on Luc Besson's visually stunning "The Fifth Element."
Return to "Star Wars" and the Prequel Trilogy
In 1997, Dudman reunited with George Lucas and his team to create the characters for "Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace." Over a decade later, he had an emotional reunion with the Yoda puppet. Working alongside new computer animation techniques, Dudman's team brought numerous alien creatures to life, giving them realistic features that blended traditional and digital effects.
The "Harry Potter" Franchise and Beyond
As the "Harry Potter" film series commenced production, the producers sought the expertise of the "Star Wars" veterans, including Dudman. For "Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire," he crafted the Hungarian Horntail dragon and the hippogriff. For "Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban," he spent nearly a year developing models for the griffins, which were later animated by computer graphics specialists.
Awards and Nominations
Dudman has received numerous accolades throughout his career. He has been nominated for five Saturn Awards for Best Makeup and four BAFTA Awards for his work on the "Harry Potter" films. He won the Saturn Award for Best Makeup for "The Mummy" in 2000 and the BAFTA Award for Best Special Effects for "The Fifth Element" in 1998.
Recent Work and Company
Dudman continues to contribute to the film industry with his work on projects such as "Beowulf & Grendel." His company, Pigs Might Fly, specializes in selling prosthetics, special effects blood, and makeup artist training programs.
Personal Life
Dudman resides in Kendal, England, in a converted old inn with his wife Sue, a film technician, and their two children, Jack and Holly.
