Nick Rhodes, born Nicholas James Bates on June 8, 1962, is an English musician and keyboardist known for his involvement in the famous band Duran Duran. Early Life and Career

Nicholas James Bates, later known as Nick Rhodes, was born into a fairly affluent family. His parents ran a toy store in Birmingham. At the age of 16 in 1978, Bates left school and, together with his friend John Taylor, formed Duran Duran. Around the same time the band acquired its name, Rhodes decided to change his surname, as he had grown tired of it during his school years when classmates often teased him with the nickname 'Master Bates'. He adopted the surname Rhodes from the Greek island of Rhodes.

Rise to Fame

By 1979, Duran Duran had already formed and was occasionally performing at the Birmingham club 'The Rum Runner', whose owners eventually became the band's managers. Rhodes himself began working as a DJ at the club. The group quickly achieved success, largely driven by Rhodes. Despite his lack of formal training, he compensated with bold experimentation, pushing the limits of his synthesizer. Unlike other similar bands of that time, Rhodes preferred classic keyboard approaches over chasing new sounds.

Rhodes soon recognized the potential of music videos, which were still in their early stages. He encouraged his bandmates to actively work on creating new music videos, even though it was not an easy task at the time as MTV had not yet become a significant force. Initially, many critics and listeners underestimated Rhodes' contributions to the band. However, it was thanks to him that Duran Duran became so popular, and he developed their unique style – slightly androgynous, somewhat vulgar, characterized by heavy makeup and constant hair coloring.

As the group's popularity grew, Rhodes' genius became increasingly apparent to fans and critics. His determination and sharp sense of humor quickly earned him a loyal following. It was Rhodes who was responsible for the band's fame, and he rightfully owns the rights to the Duran Duran name.

Later Career

In the late 1990s, Rhodes began writing lyrics and music for Duran Duran. Even his own digitally processed voice can be heard in the ending track of the album 'Medazzaland' released in 1997. In 2001, the original five members of the band reunited for new projects, and Rhodes naturally played a pivotal role. Their most recent known album, the thirteenth in their discography, was launched in February 2009 as a collaborative effort.

Personal Life and Artistic Pursuits

During a concert tour in America in 1982, Rhodes met Julie Anne Friedman, the heiress to the Yonkers department store chain in Iowa. The couple got married on August 18, 1984. They had a daughter named Tatjana Lee Orchid in 1986. However, after a brief separation and failed attempts to reconcile, Rhodes and Friedman divorced in 1992.

Rhodes is known as an avid fan of the art world and counts Andy Warhol as a close friend. In late 1984, the keyboardist even released his own book on photography.
