Billy Corgan is an American guitarist, singer, and songwriter, best known as the leader of the rock band "Smashing Pumpkins." Born on March 17, 1967, in Elk Grove, Illinois, Corgan was introduced to music at a young age by his father, Bill Corgan Sr., who was a blues guitarist. By the age of 14, Corgan had already started playing the guitar, citing hard rock bands like Cheap Trick and Van Halen as his biggest influences.

In 1985, Corgan formed his first band, called The Marked, which played gothic metal music. After performing several shows in the Chicago area, the band relocated to St. Petersburg, Florida, in hopes of furthering their career. However, the move did not bring much success, and the band disbanded, leading Corgan to return to his parents' home.

While working at a record store, Corgan began assembling his new band, which would later become the famous Smashing Pumpkins. He befriended guitarist James Iha and bassist D'Arcy, and the trio started performing in bars and clubs around Chicago. Instead of a bass guitarist, the band used a drum machine, but upon the advice of a friend, Corgan reached out to local drummer Jimmy Chamberlin, who played jazz fusion and immediately joined Smashing Pumpkins.

Early on, the newly formed quartet played as the opening act for Jane's Addiction. Like The Marked, Corgan's new band blended dark alternative sound with a metallic edge, but also incorporated psychedelic and experimental elements into their music. Several singles released on independent labels helped Smashing Pumpkins gain the attention of Caroline Records, which signed the band and released their debut album, "Gish," in 1991.

With each subsequent album, such as "Siamese Dream" (1993) and the double album "Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness" (1995), Smashing Pumpkins grew in popularity. The band's songs also appeared in notable films such as "Singles," "Lost Highway," and "Batman & Robin," and Corgan composed music for the films "Stigmata" and "Ransom" (1996). In addition, Corgan worked as a producer on albums for other artists, including Rick Ocasek and the band Hole.

After the breakup of Smashing Pumpkins in 2000, many anticipated Corgan's solo career, but he soon announced his new project, the band Zwan.
