Early Life and Education

Nick Saban was born in Fairmont, West Virginia, and grew up in the small town of Monongah. Of Croatian descent, Saban graduated from Monongah High School and later attended Kent State University, where he played defense for the Golden Flashes under legendary coach Don James. He earned a bachelor's degree in business administration in 1973 and a master's degree in sports administration in 1975.

Coaching Career

Saban's remarkable coaching career began as a graduate assistant at Kent State under James. He went on to hold various coaching positions at Syracuse, West Virginia, Ohio State, and Michigan State before becoming head coach at Toledo in 1990. He later led Louisiana State University (LSU) to a BCS National Championship in 2003 and the University of Alabama to seven national titles in 2009, 2011, 2012, 2015, 2017, 2020, and 2021.

Personal Life

Saban is a devout Catholic and regularly attends mass before games. He and his wife Terry have been married for over 45 years and have two adopted children, Nicolas and Kristen. Saban is also a strong advocate for children in need, founding the Nick's Kids Fund to support their well-being.

Coaching Tree

Saban is part of the prestigious coaching tree of Don James and Bill Belichick. He served as defensive coordinator for Belichick's Cleveland Browns and worked alongside Belichick's father, Steve, in the United States Navy.
