Nico Buwalda: Early Life
Nico Buwalda was born on June 25, 1890, in Weesp, Netherlands. He was the third of six children born to Reindert Buwalda and Tontje Schrijver. Buwalda's ancestry traced back to the village of Pingjum in Friesland.
Football Career
Buwalda began his football career with Rapiditas Weesp in his hometown. In 1911, he represented the De Trekvogels team. In 1913, at the age of 22, Buwalda joined the legendary Ajax Amsterdam. However, his debut for Ajax was not a successful one, as the team lost 5-1 to a Dutch military squad.
National Team Debut
Despite his underwhelming Ajax debut, Buwalda earned a call-up to the Netherlands national team. On April 5, 1914, just before the outbreak of World War I, he made his international debut in a 4-4 draw against Germany. Buwalda's second and final international appearance came against Belgium, where the Netherlands emerged victorious 4-2.
Later Career and Personal Life
In 1914, Buwalda transferred to Hercules Utrecht. After retiring from football, he worked as a broker and lived in Bussum. In 1930, he married Enny Mos.
