Early Life and Influences

Nicola Griffith was born in Yorkshire on September 30, 1960, as the fourth of five daughters. Her tragic loss of her sister Helena in a police chase in Australia in 1988 and another sister, Carolyn, in 2001, significantly influenced her writing.

Writing Career

Griffith's debut novel, "Ammonite," published in 1993, won the James Tiptree Jr. Award and the Lambda Literary Award. Her second novel, "Slow River," garnered the Nebula Award and another Lambda. She has collaborated with Stephen Pagel on the "Bending the Landscape" anthologies, exploring fantasy, science fiction, and horror.

Personal Life and Activism

In 1988, Griffith met her future partner, Kelley Eskridge, at a writer's workshop. They currently live in Seattle, Washington. She has been diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. Griffith actively engages in blogging and has written for "Out, Nature," and "The Huffington Post."
