Biography of Nicolae Herlea
Nicolae Herlea, born Herle, was a Romanian opera singer, specifically a baritone. He was born in 1927 in Bucharest, Romania. Herlea studied music at the Bucharest Conservatory under the renowned teacher Aurelius Costescu-Duca. He later attended specialized courses at the Accademia di Santa Cecilia in Rome with Maestro Giorgio Favaretto.
Early Career
In 1951, Herlea made his debut on the stage of the National Opera of Bucharest in the role of Silvio in "Pagliacci". He continued to work at this opera theater for many years, establishing himself as a leading baritone. In the same year, he won several international vocal competitions in Geneva, Prague, and Brussels. These victories propelled his career and opened doors for him in leading European theaters.
International Success
During the 1960s, Herlea performed at prestigious venues such as La Scala in Milan, the National Opera of Prague, the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow, and the Berlin National Opera. He frequently returned to the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow. In 1961, he appeared at Covent Garden Opera in London and later toured with the Bucharest Opera in Brussels. From 1964 to 1967, Herlea was a member of the Metropolitan Opera in New York. In 1965, he performed at the Salzburg Festival. Throughout his career, Herlea sang on opera stages in Boston, Cleveland, Detroit, and Barcelona, as well as the Vienna State Opera. In 1962, he was honored with the title of "People's Artist of Romania". Besides being a performer, Herlea was also known as a music critic.
Recordings
Herlea made complete recordings of operas such as "Il barbiere di Siviglia", "Lucia di Lammermoor", "Rigoletto", "La traviata", "La forza del destino", "Cavalleria rusticana", "Pagliacci", and "Tosca".
Current Endeavors
Currently, Nicolae Herlea leads specialized vocal courses at the Academy of Music in Bucharest.
