Early Life and Journey
Born on October 7, 1997, in New York, Maines was assigned male at birth and given the name Wyatt. However, she identified as a girl from an early age and struggled with the gender dysphoria she experienced. Her experience was later documented in the Pulitzer Prize-winning book "Becoming Nicole: The Transformation of an American Family" by E. E. Nattell.
Advocating for Transgender Rights
In high school, Maines faced discrimination when she was denied access to the girls' restroom. This led her family to file a lawsuit, which ultimately resulted in Maine becoming the first state to legally protect transgender students' bathroom access. The lawsuit argued that denying Maines access to the girls' restroom and forcing her to use the boys' restroom would subject her to harassment and bullying. The state court ruling declared that it was illegal to deny a transgender student access to the restroom corresponding to their gender identity.
Breakthrough Role and Activism
In 2015, Maines made history by portraying the first transgender superhero, Nia Nal/Dreamer, in the television series "Supergirl." Her role not only provided visibility to transgender people but also challenged stereotypes and sparked important conversations about diversity and inclusion.
